Both are floating floor systems that are isolated from the main building structure. This floating effect provides a highly resilient and consistent rebound under virtually any dynamic activity.

Global sports floors offer an impressive list of medical, comfort and sporting advantages, all scientifically tested and proven.

Other benefits include excellent thermal insulation, noise absorption. reduced height and subsequent building costs. vibration isolation, nontoxic low fire hazard rating and high resistance to damage. Additional acoustic sub-floor arrangements are available for critical installations.

Global sports floors offer natural self ventilation, low maintenance and the ability to withstand enormous point and general loads, including those imposed by large retractable seating systems and other items required for recreational and exhibition activities.

 Mechanical operation

Each Global Flooring Sports Flooring system provides its own method of forced sub-floor ventilation, which is created when any dynamic activity takes place on the floor surface. This activity causes momentary compression of the air beneath the system, which then exhausts to the full perimeter. The unique return of the system is provided by the natural movement of air encapsulated within the fully formed cells of the pure rubber isolation pads. This movement also results in the natural resilience one experiences underfoot.

 Scientific testing

Global Flooring sports floor systems have been subjected to scientific evaluation by our country's foremost testing authorities and the following aspects are just some of the attributes, which were critically assessed:

  • Area resilience
  • Point resilience
  • Resistance to binding
  • Mean strain modulus
  • Standard deflection
  • Energy loss
  • Thickness factor
  • Area effect of standard deflection
  • Floor tolerance
  • Generation of static load
  • Response to static load
  • Response to rolling loads
  • Flammability-early fire hazard of materials report:
    Ignitability
    Spread of flame index
    Heat evolved index
    Smoke developed index
    Reflectance
  • Co-efficient of friction and sliding characteristics
  • Acoustics
  • Sub-floor ventilation
  • Life of spring mounts
  • Concealed, in-floor fittings and common response.
Tests have been conducted by Unisearch Limited (University of NSW). the CSIRO Building Research Division Highett. Victoria). Department of Housing and Construction Experimental Building Station (Ryde, NSW) and Louis A Challis and Associates Pty Ltd (Woollahra, NSW). making Air-Thrust one of the most closely examined flooring systems in the world today.

The Air-Thrust system was scientifically tested on performance against data contained in the West German Standard DIN 18 032 for Sports Hall Flooring, which is internationally recognized as being the most demanding of all criteria for sports floor construction.

 Sport suitability

Global Flooring sports floors are installed in numerous complexes where the following sports are played at international competition and training levels.

  • Aerobics
  • Ballroom dancing
  • Boxing
  • Handicapped sports
  • Judo
  • Indoor hockey
  • Table tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Wrestling
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Fencing
  • Gymnastics
  • Indoor soccer
  • Netball
  • Tennis
  • Weightlifting

 THE AIR-THRUST SYSTEM

The Air-Thrust system has an overall height of 38mm and is constructed in the following manner:

A secondary vapour proof barrier of .006mm polythene film is laid over the concrete sub-floor and carefully lapped and taped.

The uniquely blended rubber Air-Thrust Air Cell pads (44mm x 44mm x 4mm) are attached to a layer of 12mm thick waterproof, exterior structural grade plywood laid at 45° to the wall in brickbond fashion - pads down.

A further layer of plywood is laid cross directionally to the bottom sheet and power nailed together with special fasteners.

The plywood surface is then level sanded and the floor installed. This is usually mosaic or block parquetry, or 12 or 19mm strip flooring.

One of Air-Thrust's major advantages is the system design spreads the load evenly over the entire floor, not just at 450mm or 600mm centres as with most other systems. Use of the patented pure rubber Air-cell pads ensures a lifetime of consistent memory in the floor.

If damaged. the surface of an Air-Thrust floor is easy to repair by replacement of individual parquetry fingers or small strips of the 12mm flooring.

Basketball associations in particular are attracted by the natural characteristics of Global Flooring strip floors.

These can be installed over concrete sub-floors or over brick pier systems.

Both methods of installation deliver similar high performance characteristics and provide a highly resilient and consistent rebound.

When installed over concrete the sports floor is isolated from the slab by a series of specially developed air cell pads which are fixed to the underside of the battens used to support the sports floor.

The battens are fixed to the concrete slab with conventional masonry anchors and particular care is taken to ensure the resilient pads are not compressed.

When installing over a brick pier system traditional bearers and joists provide the sub-floor.

Super-Shearflex mounting pads isolate the sub-floor bearers at each pier, thus eliminating deadspots and giving natural resilience and bounce to the entire floor.

Whether installing over concrete or pier. it is usually possible to accommodate any height differences between adjacent flooring and the sports floor by using isolation mountings and flooring support timbers of different thicknesses.

Skirting and Edge Trims Depending upon the requirements of each individual project. there are a number of different methods by which a Global Flooring sports floor can be treated at the perimeter or where it abuts other floor finishes.

In each case, the natural movement of the sports floor is not restricted in any way other than by design.

In-floor Fittings Australia's leading manufacturers of gymnasium equipment have designed a complete range of fittings for exclusive use with Global Flooring sports floors.

Flush mounted, in-floor covers with parquetry inlay enable easy access without impairing the performance of the floor.

Because of the unique construction of the flooring systems it is possible to install removable panels to suit any requirement. These panels are edge trimmed with 3mm brass without affecting the floor's response.

For more than 100 years the names Global and Ned Kelly have been synonymous with native Australian hardwood floors in major community, sports and commercial buildings. Today both are member companies of the Global Flooring Division.

In the mid 1960s both companies played a leading role in the introduction of high performance timber floors to the Australian sports community.

The Air-Thrust pneumatic flooring system was introduced to Australia from the USA by Boral and quickly followed by Duncans developing in Australia sprung strip sports floors utililising load bearing vibration control mountings.

This investment in research and product development has continued and today Global Flooring is associated with some of the nation's most prestigious sports complexes including the State Sports Centre Sydney, the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and the Australian Institute of Sport.

Supply and Fix - a complete service

  Global Flooring Squash Court Floors

The natural resilience of Global Flooring squash court flooring systems as opposed to artificial resilience, results in a significant improvement in player performance and a vastly improved player comfort through the absorption of shock whilst running and jumping.

Global Flooring floors give a true ball response and regular ball bounce - there are definitely no "dead spots".

Other special Global Flooring squash floor benefits include:

  • Significant noise reduction through unique design
  • Excellent insulation qualities
  • Fire rated - will not support combustion
  • Economical and quick to install
  • Extremely easy and economical to maintain
  • Substantial overall cost savings in construction where an average of 455mm building height can be avoided
  • Non-toxic
You can specify either on Airthrust or sprung T&G floor. Both avoid many of the structural and vibration problems normally associated with squash court construction when other than slab-on-ground design is used.

Squash Court Flooring incorporates a parallel finger pattern as a specialised requirement of restricted court design.

  Guarantee

The timber chosen for Global Air-Thrust pneumatic flooring is carefully selected for this purpose and is fully warranted for 12 months. AirThrust flooring systems are installed by qualified, highly skilled trades people who work in accordance with recognised Australian Standards, and who guarantee their work and the Air-Thrust system for a period of five (5) years. Global Flooring accepts no liability for their workmanship.
